Northwest Georgia daily seeking sports editor

The Rome News-Tribune, a daily print and digital newspaper covering Rome and Floyd County, Ga., has an exciting opportunity for a sports editor. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for writing and be committed to reporting sports in a small, but growing community in Northwest Georgia that boasts several high school and college programs, and a community excited and supportive of local athletics.

Applicants should be self-motivated with an ability to meet deadlines, manage freelance sports writers and photographers, as well as work within the constraints of AP style guidelines.

Sports editor duties include:

  • Coverage of local high school sports, college sports and Minor League Baseball (Rome Emperors) as well as local recreation and youth sports items.
  • Plan for what content will be included in the sports section each day.
  • Post breaking sports news, updates and scores on social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
  • Write feature stories and columns on various sports topics.
  • Proof and approve sports pages for the print edition.
  • Maintain local sports schedule for each week to include in the sports section.
  • Coordinate with freelance writers and photographers for sports coverage.
  • Maintain contacts and communication with local athletic directors and coaches.
  • A knowledge of content management systems, Google Docs, and Slack is a plus, but not required.
