The Andalusia Star-News is seeking a dedicated and community-minded Editor to lead our award-winning newsroom. This is an exciting opportunity to shape local journalism in Covington County and continue our legacy of excellence in reporting, storytelling, and community engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day editorial operations of the newspaper (print and digital)
- Use software to lay out print and digital editions bi-weekly (Wednesday and Saturday)
- Edit and lay out special publications affiliated with the company
- Edit and write stories with a strong focus on local news, sports, government, and community features
- Develop interview questions for stories and schedule interviews for stories
- Manage team of stringers
- Ensure accuracy, fairness, and timeliness in all reporting
- Collaborate with the publisher and advertising staff on content planning and deadlines
- Typeset daily jail logs, obituaries, birth announcements, engagements, etc.
- Work with advertising manager and sales team to publish ads on company’s Facebook page
- Complete occasional office tasks if needed (answering telephone, assisting customers)
- Represent the newspaper at community events and maintain strong community ties
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is preferred
- Minimum 1 year of newsroom experience (editorial leadership experience is a plus)
- Experience with photography and editing photos
- Have strong editing, writing, and headline-writing skills
- Have or develop passion for community journalism and local storytelling
- Have ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and multitask effectively
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and content management systems
- Familiarity with WordPress blog
- Knowledge of AP Style
- Social media and digital content strategy experience

Andalusia Star-News, 207 Dunson St., Andalusia, Alabama (on-site position)
